One Piece Garp Remain a Vice Admiral

Garp is undeniably one of the strongest Marines in One Piece, but he seems to be stuck as a vice admiral, World Government in One Piece follows a highly structured power system with the mysterious Imu at the top.

Although the higher figures are unarguably stronger than the lower-ranking officers, the hierarchy between the upper ranks is vague -- especially since the strength of the authorities above the fleet admiral remains a mystery. While it is clear that both the fleet admiral and the three admirals after him are forces to be reckoned with, vice admiral Monkey D. Garp can give them a run for their money.

Garp is one of the most beloved Marines in One Piece, Not just because of his association with Luffy, but also his overall carefree personality. Setting aside appearances, Garp's strength is nothing to scoff at.

His feats as a young Marine earned him the epithet "Hero of the Marines," though he isn't fond of the incident accompanying the title. Garp also fought alongside and against big-name pirates during the legendary Gol D. Roger's era, earning more heroic tales under his name. With all his deeds and accolades, it seems only natural to wonder why Garp remains a vice admiral.

One Piece Chapter 957, the former fleet admiral Sengoku detailed Garp's heroic past to the other Marine officers. He told them of the God Valley incident, where Garp teamed up with Roger to stop the infamous Rocks Pirates. Garp refuses to recall the incident not only because he fought alongside a pirate, but also because he fought for the Celestial Dragons' welfare.

Sengoku further explained that Garp's moral compass won't allow him to serve the despicable World Nobles -- also the reason he turned down promotion on multiple occasions.

Even though the Marines are the supposed embodiment of goodness in One Piece, protecting the vile Celestial Dragons is its primary duty. Fans are well aware of the World Nobles' wickedness. After all, the Celestial Dragons have openly committed multiple crimes against humanity without batting an eyelid. Sengoku reiterated that the admiral's position is directly under the Celestial Dragons' command, and One Piece proved this by showing Fleet Admiral Akainu being at the Five Elders' beck and call.

Garp is aware of this, and as a result he repeatedly rejected offers of promotion.

The Marine vice admiral has proved on various occasions that he doesn't share Akainu's version of justice, and vehemently believes that being a criminal does not necessarily equate to being a bad person.

To prove this, Garp adopted the infamous Pirate King's son, Ace, as he agrees with Roger's view: a father's crimes are not inherited by the son. He also entrusted both Ace, his adopted grandson, and Luffy, his biological grandson, to the care of Curly Dadan, a mountain bandit. Similarly, Garp has no issue attacking a Marine officer for his personal interest, as shown when he was about to kill Akainu for murdering Ace.

Luffy Is Like Monkey D. Garp

Luffy may be a pirate, but there are several characteristics he shares with his Marine vice admiral grandfather, One Piece's protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy is a young pirate who set out to sea at the age of 17 to find Gol D. Roger's treasure, the One Piece. Much of Luffy's childhood was spent with his two brothers, Ace and Sabo. He didn't have any interaction with his  parents.

Luffy has spent a significant amount of time with his grandfather, Monkey D. Garp. While Luffy doesn't particularly take after his father Monkey D. Dragon, he does share quite a lot of things with his grandfather.

Luffy may have inherited his grandfather's carefree attitude, but he also gained the vice admiral's firm morality. Garp despises turning a blind eye to the Celestial Dragons' despicable deeds, and more so serving under them. So even though he was repeatedly offered a promotion above vice admiral, he always turned it down -- and it is unlikely he will be changing his mind in future chapters of One Piece.

Luffy And Garp Both Fall Asleep Instantly

Luffy is a tremendous captain, he is carefree. He often falls asleep in random places without warning. During the Syrup Village arc, he had to fight the Black Cat Pirates. Instead, he fell asleep and had to be rescued later on. This is very similar to how Garp fell asleep when he was supposed to escort Axe-hand Morgan to the Navy. Later, both Garp and Luffy fell asleep when they confronted each other after the Water Seven arc.

Luffy And Garp Both Care Deeply About Their Loved Ones

Garp raised Luffy, it's only natural that Luffy would take after him. Luffy cares deeply about his crewmates and his family. Similarly, Garp cares a lot about his family as well. As Luffy's grandfather, Garp wanted to make sure Luffy stayed out of trouble. He hoped Luffy would follow in his footsteps and join the Marines. When Ace was captured, Garp was torn, he couldn't help shedding tears for the grandson he raised.

Garp And Luffy Possess Monstrous Strength

Garp was a monstrous fighter in his youth. According to him, he reduced 8 mountains to to warm up for taking down Chinjao. Luffy, on the other hand, is one of the most powerful pirates in the world at the moment, known to be strong enough to hold his own against Kaido. When Luffy and Kaido clashed, their Conqueror's Haki split the heavens apart.

Luffy And Garp Possess Tremendous Haki

Silvers Rayleigh, the former right-hand man of the Pirate King, taught Luffy how to use Haki. While it took time for Luffy to learn how to master Haki, he currently uses all three advanced forms.

Meanwhile, Garp's Haki was strong enough to clash with Gol D. Roger. The Pirate King recognized him as a worth adversary.

Luffy And Garp Made A Mark On History

Garp is one of the most legendary characters in One Piece. He played a major role in the God Valley Incident 38 years ago. Following the defeat of Rocks, Garp earned the title of "The Hero of the Marines." The Pirate King acknowledged his strength.

Luffy is making his own mark on history by attempting to become the King of the Pirates. It's safe to assume that Luffy is already seen as a historical figure in the New World.

One Piece Re-Introduces Luffy's Final Gear

One Piece has re-introduced Luffy final Gear Fourth form with the final moments of the news chapter! Eiichiro Oda's original manga series has reached the climax of the war on Onigashima as the final battles have been settled across the island.

With the major defeat taking place over the previous chapters, all there is left to settle everything is for Luffy to successfully take down Kaido on the roof of the Skull Dome. While there is still much to keep track of with each new chapter, the newest chapter of the series finally revisits Luffy's progress against Kaido.

Previous updates in the fight between Luffy and Kaido revealed that the two of them had reached a new understanding with one another. A burgeoning respect between the two had grown, and with that respect Kaido started to fight harder than ever before.

The same could be said for Luffy as the end of the newest chapter of the series sees him dive back into his final Gear Fourth form, Snakeman in one last effort to take down Kaido by any means necessary.

Chapter 1041 of the series rejoins Luffy's fight with Kaido on the top of the Skull Dome, and Kaido realizes that Big Mom has been defeated. He continues to clash with Luffy, but his sorrow over Big Mom's loss (especially after the two of them had vowed to reach the One Piece treasure together in a powerful alliance before all of this went down) makes him fight that much harder. It's the same for Luffy as he was surprised by Law and Kid's victory, and thus is now pushing forward to his own win.

Snakeman Luffy lands a couple of notable blows on Kaido just as quickly as we had seen him use the ability before, and Luffy's throwing every last bit of energy he has at Kaido in order to take him down. Knowing that a loss here means that the people of Wano will suffer, he's giving all that he can in his final trump card even if it means that his body is wrecked in the process. As long as Kaido is defeated, Luffy won't care about the consequences to himself.
